Buying and Selling online at Ebay and other sites

More about Best Match:

This is a new development too. To improve YOUR best match on Ebay, cut down on shipping costs and your item will rank up on how people see it. Also, list your shipping cost for the same reason.

Keep all your ratings up by being nice to your customers, wrapping well, and communicating right away when you are mailing and thanking them in your email and on your packing slip.

Communications

Communicate using the site’s mail area. Copy each letter to yourself by using the check box. Join online groups for news and advice. Check the early postings too. Join Yahoo Groups for greater advertising and support. I just did this recently and noticed a spike in my website viewing. Investigate AOL groups and MSN groups. These may also be very good. Join Ebay groups or online groups according to your interests. Visit them often. Post there with your own links. Advertising Put a link to your auctions on your email signature. Yahoo makes this easy. Other places also offer this. Put your auction email on groups and all your correspondence. Avail yourself of all the free ads you can find.

Do’s and Don’ts

Check your email every day. Check Ebay’s email every day if you are selling for others.

There are illegal things you can’t do — like you can’t say "like new" or your auction will be pulled. Make sure to list in the right category (check the Ebay list).

Also, there is no shill bidding (having your friend bid on an item to drive the price up).

Start your auction at a price that is low, but still OK for you to make a little bit of profit. If there is a bidding war, that’s great. But at least you have made your price.

Rule #1. The customer is always right.

Rule #2. When the customer is wrong, the customer is still always right. Or at least let the customer think so!

Be positive in your listings. Instead of saying "no refunds on used merchandise" say "gently used items sold ‘as is’." Money back if item is not as described. Etc. This is just an example.

Act as if you trust your customers. They will appreciate the positivity.

Copy others a little bit but never use their photos, templates, or copy word-for-word. Just see what is working for others and try to do the same kind of thing. Be original, but use the others as a guide.

Spoof@ebay.com, spoof@paypal.com. Never give out any personal information over the internet or phone. Never click on a link unless you know it is legitimate. Somebody could get personal information from you or download spyware to you this way. You can report suspicious emails or activity to the spoof emails above.

Always use anti-virus software and a firewall, especially if you own a Windows based computer system. Get an expert to help you set it up, or do your best with the instructions they give you.

SafeHarbor — get advice quickly from Ebay when you are having trouble. There is a direct-to-Ebay phone number here:

Buying off of Ebay: Just say no to this. It is not allowed at Ebay, and can get you kicked off the site. You ARE allowed to do a private sale, however. Ebay gets fees this way.

Getting in touch with Ebay:

People say you have to be a PowerSeller to use an Ebay phone number, but if you google it, you can find the number.

There is also now an Ebay button you can press for instant help on the main page, upper right. (Live Help).

Mediation — use the mediation there to file Unpaid Item — they will work with your customer to get your payment.

SquareTrade — this is a pay service, but may have a free trial. Caution: this does not work if the buyer will not cooperate. The symbol on your auction does inspire trust, but costs money.

More ideas:

Blogs and online podcasts — these are great helps. They will teach you tips and ways to make your online presence better. You can use Ebay official ones or other ones from other sites.

Generate traffic with blogs, podcasts, etc. and your groups postings (every Wednesday).
